We Entertainment: Vision
The
Premise:
Everyone is
born or grows up with aesthetic sense, drive and desire to create his/her own
identity. However, the necessity of catering to basic needs, lack of access to
the right people and the institutional barriers – often cowers down the
individual spirit. We all know that every successful story is all about 98% of
hardwork and 2% of luck. However, even if hard work scores, in most cases – the
2% of luck is what keeps an individual from shining through. Perhaps there are
a lot more Walt Disneys, Steven Spielbergs, and James Camerons amongst us than
what we know of. Perhaps, because they lack the right connections they are not
being able to achieve their potential. Sometimes they are constrained
geographically (for example – even the best of animators often has to stay back
in a geographically backward location because of old and ailing parents – and
therefore loses his/her chance of working for a place like the Disney studios),
sometimes, even if they are in the right places – simple access to the people who
run the institutions is what keeps them from realizing their potential… and
sometimes, they themselves are not aware of their potential.
Individually,
it’s difficult to effectuate changes in the world. However, collectively, we can
make that change, we all
believe that if there is one name that needs to go down in history, it should
be ‘ours’. WE, the people involved in the
Linkedin group of ‘let’s create the world’s next big film/game’ have been
united by a single passion, we all love storytelling, creativity and animation.
We have grown up and still enjoy the inspiring tales of Lion King, we have all
laughed with Shrek, we have had fun watching Beauty and the Beast. We believe
in the power of stories and how they can spread happiness throughout the world,
these stories can start the change to that better world. There’s one more thing
that we believe in - WE have the power to
create such stories. Collectively, we are a group of creative writers, artists,
directors, designers and producers – who have the ability to create and spread
such stories across the world. The unification
of all these necessities, passions and talent with the single goal of changing
the world one creative project at a time, has produced this talented group, the WEEntertainment Group.
Because our unique group is formed
from people living in many different countries, WE do not need to bring our
work across the globe; WE are already all over the world.
That is the
key premise of this group – whichever way we see it.
Collective
objective:
To tell inspiring stories that have
the power to change the world.
How do we
plan to tell our stories:
WE are entertainers by profession. We can create great
stories and bring them to life using our creativity, imagination and skills in
animation, modeling, character building, story writing, etc.
We will use these skills and the power of collaboration to
bring our stories to life and spread them out to the world.
How do we
collaborate?
When we started the group of ‘can we create…’ there were just
a handful of us – who were writing on a regular basis, there was hardly any
vision – just our passion for movies. In the span of thirty days – the group
has reached a size of more than 60 people. About 10 times its initial size. In
terms of skillsets – we have had a major leap – jumping from a one marketing
guy, one 3d artist and one tech scientist to a team of 60 creative artists,
directors, production heads, art directors etc.
In terms of vision – we started with the idea of making an
independent short animation – and now we are talking about making the first
real virtual animation studio that will create stories with the power of
changing the world.
The following factors have played a key role in the possible
ways of collaborating in this vision:
1. We have all
been inspired by the idea of storytelling and spreading them out to the world.
2. We have the
necessary skillsets to create such engaging stories
3. Whatever we
lack individually, WE can make up collectively
4. We have all
tried to do something on our own – apart from doing 9 to 5 jobs. Therefore,
individually, we do possess the entrepreneurial spirit in some way or other. This
time instead of 60 or more talented people pushing in different ways to achieve
something, WE are all pushing in the same direction to achieve our goal.
5. We are
extremely active on the online space.
So what can
we do together:
As we have ourselves said time and again, ‘we have the power
of WE’ – the ability and opportunity to collaborate, where we can both
exercise, share and build on our skills.
Therefore, together we can form a virtual studio where we can
all contribute in our respective ways to build a strong entity in the world of
entertainment.
What do we
try to achieve
During our first round of discussions regarding storyline, et
al… it came out that whatever movies we make we should be able to make a
difference to the lives of children. Broken families, parents living apart from
each other are very common instances in today’s world – and the one person it
impacts the most is the child at home – who finds it difficult to adjust to a
world without both the parents by his or her side.
This is a problem that many of us and our friends have faced
too – growing up with only the mother and father by his/her side and trying to
adjust to their lives rather than live his/her own.
Thus, the stories that we tell – need to have a child
protagonist with the parents around him/her.
Every story that we create will make the family bond tighter.
Thus, most of the stories will showcase the power of the
family.
This will achieve two things from a social point of view:
- 1. It will try and instill the value of family bonding in the minds of our viewers.
- 2. It will appeal to the emotions of the child as well as to the entire family.
From a business perspective:
1. It will
increase the viewership of the movies both at plexes as well as at home – as
unlike action children’s stuff – the stories will have the family at the center
and will create an emotional bond with both the parents and the child.
WE ENTERTAINMENT: THE ENTITY IN CYBERSPACE
WEEntertainment will be a company that will produce, direct
and distribute animation movies, games and learning programs.
As of now, the company vision that we see is as follows for
the next four years:
EXPLAINING
THE STRUCTURE:
WEENTERTAINMENT:
WEEntertainment will be the holding company – which will have all the stakes for WESTUDIOs and We Interactive.
WEEntertainment will be an employee owned company – and everyone working for WEEntertainment will have a chance to share profits.
WEEntertainment will be the holding company – which will have all the stakes for WESTUDIOs and We Interactive.
WEEntertainment will be an employee owned company – and everyone working for WEEntertainment will have a chance to share profits.
WEEntertainment – will differ from other companies in a lot
of ways:
1. It will
work with contractors – i.e. people will come on a contract basis for each
project under each of the new entities.
2. Every
contractor will get a fee for his/her contribution. At the same time, every
contractor will also get share of the profits (which will be variable) based on
the success of the overall company.
WEEntertainment will work through independent agents present
in every major city in the world – who will present WE PRODUCTS to clients,
distribute them and sell them.
EVERYBODY WORKING UNDER WEENTERTAINMENT WILL BE PART OWNER OF
THE COMPANY. PEOPLE WORKING AS ALLIES – WILL ALSO HOLD MAJOR STAKES IN THE
COMPANY.
(However, the process of taking on allies and employees will
close at a certain point during the formation of the company. Post that joining
will be only through a need basis).
THEY WILL SELECT THE MEMBERS IN THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS – AND
WILL HAVE A SAY IN THE WAY THE COMPANY IS RUN.
WESTUDIOs:
WESTUDIO will be an animation studio set up under WEEntertainment, which will produce independent animation films.
WESTUDIO will be an animation studio set up under WEEntertainment, which will produce independent animation films.
Each movie project undertaken by WESTUDIO will be an end to
end project. – i.e.
starting from concept to distribution, WESTUDIO will work with independent
artists, writers, designers, directors, etc. These people will be working as
contract employees (with ESOPs) for WESTUDIO on
a project basis and will have to commit a minimum number of hours per year
under their contract.
The rates will also be fixed for this.
WESTUDIO will distribute its films – through its distributor
network who will work as allies.
Unlike the normal employer-employee format, WESTUDIO will
work through alliances made with these artists, writers, designers, etc.
WESTUDIOs will undertake the following types of projects:
1. Full-length animation films: Full
length animation films mostly targeting children and young adults (2- 10, 11- 15-15, 16-20) will
be produced by WESTUDIOs. WESTUDIO will
also have a set of directions to be followed during story development that will
differentiate it from other movie studios.
While children and young adults will be the primary
target audience – the stories will also appeal to parents and families at
large.
Thus, the age groups of 21-45 becomes the secondary
target audience.
2. Short animations: Animation shorts – by
corporates, film bodies, etc. will be taken up by WESTUDIO.
3. TV Shows: Animation shows for television
will be taken as turnkey projects for WESTUDIOs.
4. Syndicated blockbusters (Post-production, animation
and Visual Effects): Almost all films shot with real actors need a substantial amount of
VFX work to be executed. WESTUDIO will work on such syndicated work for
international blockbusters – where the animation and VFX will be created by WESTUDIO.
We will initially start with VFX and animation for
syndicated blockbusters – and then build on our post production facilities.
WE
Interactive:
Apart from WESTUDIO, WE Interactive will be another entity set up under WEEntertainment, which will have the following divisions:
Apart from WESTUDIO, WE Interactive will be another entity set up under WEEntertainment, which will have the following divisions:
a. WEGAMES: WEGAMES will develop interactive
computer games based on the copyrighted work produced under WESTUDIO. Thus, WEGAMES will have the possibility to
turn every film original content produced by WESTUDIO to game out and
market.
b. WELEARNING: WELEARNING will be an eLearning company
set up under WE Interactive that
will develop world class eLearning products for children. WELEARNING will work
closely with WEGAMES to develop these learning modules for educational
companies and institutions.A lot of WELEARNING products will be
based on the characters produced by WESTUDIO movies. For example – if we create
an alternative version of Peter Pan stories in WESTUDIO, it will be transformed
into an education module for WELEARNING, where Peter Pan will probably teach
children (in the age groups of 2 – 5 years) rhymes, alphabets, etc. Thus, the stories and characters
that we develop through WESTUDIO will be used throughout other division as
well.
c. WE Game Changers: This will
be the R&D lab of WEEntertainment – which will have an independent P&L.
The target for WEGame Changers will be to research and produce one game-changing
product each year that can make the world a better place for children. WEGame
Changers will integrate all products and divisions of WEEntertainment and
develop game changing solutions that can be disseminated through various
platforms. (For example – a mobile based app that can help kids to develop
their story writing skills).
